I am currently enrolled in a special education teacher program. Before entering my current university I acquired a bachelors degree that is unrelated to education. After college I enlisted in the United States Air Force as an Arabic linguist. I finished my time in the military, became a mom of two and stayed at home for 10 years. My love of education and my husband's job led me to homeschool my son from kindergarten to 3rd grade.
After 10 years at home I entered the workforce part-time as a paraprofessional working with English Language Learners (ELL) at a middle school. Many conversations with the special education department at the middle school led me to apply to the teacher program at my current university.
While this website is a required project, I am taking it a step further, to make this website fully functional for parents and students to advocate for themselves. Times are changing in special education for the better and many schools are either in process of changing, ahead of the game or the worst scenario, merely saying a student is fully included when the student is not.
As you look through the different pages I hope that you get a feel that the new age of special education is collaboration between the family, student, providers and teachers. If you have a preschooler you are not too soon to use these ideas, it is the best time.
I wish you the best on your journey,
Roanna
